Mbaise Overview

Mbaise is located in Imo State in the southeastern part of Nigeria. In the Igbo (also spelt "Ibo" and pronounced E'bO) language, the name literally means "five towns." The five towns that make up Mbaise are Agbaja, Ahiara, Ekwerazu, Ezinihitte and Oke-Uvuru. The towns are grouped into three local government areas (LGAs), namely: Aboh-, Ahiazu- and Ezinihitte-Mbaise LGAs.

MAP OF MBAISE & SURROUNDING TOWNS

Mbaise has a rich cultural heritage in Igboland. The great "Abigbo" dance troupe, "Oji" Mbaise, which celebrates the significance of the kola nut, "Iri-ji" Mbaise, an annual celebration of the yam harvest - all are festivities for which Mbaise is well-known in Nigeria and beyond.

Mbaise people are also known for starting self-help projects. As a result, most of the infrastructures in Mbaise are products of private initiatives and communal efforts. For example, as the Nigerian federal and state governments fail to respond to the needs of Mbaise, the citizens task themselves for projects such as electricity, water bore-holes, health clinics, roads, etc.
